About Disability Employment Awareness Month

Provincial Proclamation

Since 2012, the Province of Manitoba has officially proclaimed October as Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) in our province. The 2018 Proclamations were jointly signed by Heather Stefanson, Minister of Families; Scott Fielding, Minister responsible for the Civil Service; and, Kelvin Goertzen, Minister of Education and Training.

COORDINATION

Following the Proclamation of DEAM in 2012, the Multi-Sector Committee (MSC) on Employment for Persons with Disabilities assumed the responsibility of developing and promoting the observance of DEAM in Manitoba.

About the MSC…

The Multi-Sector Committee on Employment for Persons with Disabilities was originally established in response to a Multi-Sector Strategy Forum held in Winnipeg in 2005. The Forum provided an opportunity to begin a dialogue with employers and employer organizations, employment and training agencies, people with disabilities and government representatives to work toward a common goal: increasing employment for persons with disabilities

In 2009 the MSC was nominated for a Manitoba Service Excellence Award in the partnership category. Over the years, the MSC was involved with a number of initiatives and had become a particularly valuable information sharing and networking group. While chaired by a representative from Manitoba Education and Training, the MSC had always tried to maintain broad representation across 4 key sectors with members from the following:
